Maybe you've stopped using clay masks altogether. Your skin feels drier than it used to, and the last thing you want is that tight, pulled feeling afterward. A clay mask doesn't have to work against mature skin. What matters is how it's formulated, and how you use it.
I understand this worries well. So let me share how we thought about it at LEAF, what's inside our clay mask, and the simple choices behind every formula we make.
Why does clay worry women with mature skin?
The worry makes sense. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) explains that around menopause, skin holds less water and can become more sensitive and easier to irritate (AAD). When your skin already feels thirsty, anything that cleanses can feel risky.
A scientific review of clays in cosmetics describes how they're used for cleansing, and how some clays can hold on to impurities on the skin's surface (Viseras et al., 2021).
Think of a mask like a recipe. The same flour can make a light, soft bread or a hard, dry cracker. It depends on what you mix it with. Clay works the same way: what surrounds it in the formula changes how the mask feels on your skin.
What's inside the LEAF Nutri-Mask, and why?
LEAF's first two products took three years of development. For the clay mask, I wanted something made for dry and sensitive skin: a mask that cleanses without asking your skin to give up its comfort. Here's what we chose, ingredient by ingredient.
Clay minerals: the cleansing part
The Nutri-Mask combines kaolin with French green clay. In the scientific review mentioned above, kaolinite is described as lightly abrasive, and smectite clays as able to hold on to impurities (Viseras et al., 2021). On our product page, that is exactly how we describe the mask: it helps remove dead skin and impurities, without harsh scrubbing.
Brazilian açaí: a piece of home
I grew up in a small town in the countryside of Brasil, surrounded by nature and by women who believed in simple rituals of care. They taught me to pay attention. Açaí fruit extract from Brasil is our way of bringing that into every jar.
You'll notice I write Brasil with an "s". That's how we spell it in Portuguese, the language I grew up speaking, and it's how LEAF writes it too: a small way of keeping our roots in every word.
In a 2018 laboratory study, an açaí fruit extract showed strong antioxidant activity in lab tests, and a cream made with it caused no irritation in a 48-hour patch test with 20 volunteers (Censi et al., 2018). That study used its own formula, not ours, but it helps explain why açaí is valued in skin care. In the Nutri-Mask, açaí is part of what gives the mask its antioxidant care.
Aloe, glycerin and niacinamide: the comfort part
Around the clay, we chose ingredients for comfort and moisture: aloe leaf juice, glycerin (one of the ingredients the AAD mentions for menopausal skin) and niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3 that research reviews describe as well tolerated in skin care (Boo, 2021). Together, they help the mask contribute to moisture for sensitive skin.
"When I apply it, it feels cool and fresh, geladinha, as we say in Brasil. And when I use the Nutri-Mask, my skin looks more luminous and visibly cleaner." — Janete OBriant, Founder, LEAF Daily Care
That's my own experience. Every skin is different, so yours may respond in its own way.
How does LEAF choose what goes into a formula?
The Nutri-Mask follows the same choices behind everything we make. I'd rather tell you exactly what they mean than give you vague labels.
-
Cruelty-free, with a certification. In the U.S., the FDA notes that "cruelty-free" has no legal definition (FDA). That's why LEAF is certified by PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies program, so the claim is checked by an outside organization, not just by us.
-
Built around plant extracts and clay minerals, named one by one. Açaí, aloe, bamboo and passion fruit extracts, together with kaolin and French green clay. You'll find every ingredient listed on each product page and below.
-
Free from parabens. Parabens are preservatives. The FDA says it has no information showing that parabens, as used in cosmetics, affect human health (FDA). We simply chose a different preservative system, and our formulas are free from parabens and phthalates.
-
No synthetic dyes. In the U.S., color additives in cosmetics need FDA approval, and synthetic colors also need batch certification (FDA). LEAF formulas don't contain added colors: what you see in the jar comes from the ingredients themselves.
-
Made for dry and sensitive skin. Both of our formulas are dermatologist-tested, and we still recommend what dermatologists recommend for any new product: patch test first (AAD).
For estheticians and dermatologists: Nutri-Mask INCI, as published on the product page
Aqua, Propanediol, Kaolin, Illite, Glycerin, Xanthan Gum, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Allantoin, Caprylyl Glycol, Kaolinite, Lavandula Angustifolia Oil, Smectite, Niacinamide, Ethylhexylglycerin, Betaine, Helichrysum Organic Essential Oil, Maltodextrin, Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract, Bambusa Vulgaris Shoot Extract, Limonene, Linalool, Passiflora Edulis Fruit Extract.
How do you use the Nutri-Mask?
Follow the directions on the product page; they're there for a reason (LEAF):
-
Apply it to a clean, dry face.
-
Let it dry for a few minutes.
-
Remove it with a cloth dampened in lukewarm water.
-
Use it twice a week. Avoid the eye area and stop using it if irritation occurs.
Afterward, follow with your moisturizer. Dermatologists recommend applying moisturizer after washing, while skin is still slightly damp (AAD). If you'd like to see where the mask fits into a simple morning and evening routine, our guide to a simple skincare routine for menopausal skin walks you through it.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a clay mask if I have dry, mature skin?
You can choose a clay mask made for dry and sensitive skin, follow its directions, patch test it first, and moisturize afterward. The AAD notes that skin around menopause can be drier and more sensitive, so gentle choices matter.
How often should I use a clay mask?
Follow the directions for your product. The LEAF Nutri-Mask is designed to be used twice a week.
What does "paraben-free" mean?
Parabens are preservatives used in some cosmetics. A paraben-free product uses a different preservative system. The FDA says it has no information showing that parabens, as used in cosmetics, affect human health.
What does "cruelty-free" mean?
The FDA notes that "cruelty-free" has no legal definition in the U.S. A certification from an outside organization, such as PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies program, is one way to know what the claim covers.
